1. Cardinal numbers

Central numbers are the numbers that nosotros use for counting or designating quantity : English-speakers use them every day - one two three 4 etc.   In terms of grammar, they belong to the category of determining adjectives.

From 0 to 100 - From goose egg to a hundred

The number 0 is variously expressed equally nought (in British English language) or nix (in all forms of English language) : in the center of a series of digits, it may too be pronounced "oh".  Everyone has heard of James Bond, besides known equally 007. That is pronounced "oh-oh-seven" or "double-oh-seven", but never "nought-nought-7" nor "zip-goose egg-seven".

Numbers from 101 to 999 - 3-digit numbers

Important: the examples and rules beneath illustrate Britishusage.
In the USA, the word and is normally omitted.
A hyphen (-) is normally used in numbers between 21 and 99, whether these stand alone or are part of a larger number.

From these examples, all other three-digit numbers in English can be formed.

Notes :

The word "hundred" , except equally a round number (a number ending in 00), is always followed by "and", both in spoken English and in written English when numbers are written out as words.

The word hundred never takes an "s" equally role of a fundamental number.
For numbers between 100 and 199, i normally says "a hundred" and not "one hundred".
The expression "i hundred" is used only to put accent on the figure i (i.e. one, non two nor 3), or to stress the word.

Example:
I counted one hundred and twenty planes     (and not 220 nor 320)

Hundreds in the plural

The words hundred, m and one thousand thousand never take an s in the plural as cardinal numbers (which are a class of adjective).
They only have an southward when used as nouns designating an imprecise quantity of hundreds or thousands, etc., followed by of ...
Examples

At that place are hundredsouth of ducks on the lake.
Thousandsouthward of people crammed into the stadium

These sentences exercise not say how many hundreds nor how many thousands: the "s" is needed as it is the only mark of plurality.

Numbers from 1000 to 1,000,000

• Apart from round numbers (numbers catastrophe in 00) long numbers in a higher place 1000 are ordinarily written in figures, not in words. They are written in words hither as a means to show how they are used in spoken English.

Reminder : these examples and rules reflect usage in British English.
In the USA, the word and is usually omitted.
Then in American English language 250,000 is expressed as Two hundred fifty grand.

• After g, if the word "hundred" does not occur in the number, it is the word thousand which is followed by and.
• Apart from round numbers (1000, 7000 etc) there will always be an and somewhere in the number.

Examples; 1018 = One 1000 and eighteen
(or in US English : 1 yard eighteen)
43,003 = forty-three 1000 and iii
56,100 = 50-half-dozen g 1 hundred

Otherwise the word thousand is not followed by and, just the word hundred is.

Examples; 1708 = One chiliad seven hundred and eight
25,864 = Twenty-five thou eight hundred and sixty-4

• In numbers from 1100 to 1199,  the single hundred volition be pronounced one and non a.
• Iv-digit numbers below 2000 (and rarely in a higher place) may sometimes likewise be expressed starting with "eleven hundred", "twelve hundred", etc.

Examples;
1100 = One thousand ane hundredor Xi hundred
22,100 = twenty-2 thousand one hundred.
654,122 = Six hundred and fifty-four m, one hundred and 20-two

• The word hundred is always followed by "and" once it is followed by another digit, and even if it occurs more than than once in the number.
• As cardinal numbers, neither hundred nor thousand ever accept a plural "s". (More)
• Whether writing long numbers in English, whether in figures or in words, it is normal to put a comma every 3 digits.The comma is optional with four-digit numbers.

Examples;
44,399 Forty-iv thousand, three hundred and ninety-nine
637,316 = Half dozen hundred and thirty-7 thousand, 3 hundred and sixteen.

Numbers greater than a 1000000

The same principles apply.
The number merely starts with a quantity of millions, for case
1 1000000...
or 20-v one thousand thousand...
or Eight hundred and xx million...
Ii billion

Examples;
1,002,018 = One million ii thousand and xviii
i,001,116 = One million i one thousand one hundred and 16.
736,654,121 = Vii hundred and thirty-six million, 6 hundred and fifty-four grand, one hundred and xx-one

The word hundred is e'er followed by "and" unless it is round (with "00"), no matter how often it occurs in the number.

Other points to remember:

Figures can exist expressed differently when they refer to dates and telephone numbers, or when they are after a decimal betoken.
